Learning Connects Science Through Nature
Science Standards at San Gorgonio OSS
San Gorgonio OSS incorporates the CA Educational Princials and Concepts (EPIC’s) that highlight the deep relationships between humans and the natural world. We teach all STEAM related curriculum for each grade level guided by the Next Generation Science Standards.
Each year we update our curriculum with new information that includes up to date research and lessons with current topics, such as fire ecology and the impact of climate change on our environment.
Our Academic Trails
Each day students will take 1 to 2 academic hikes.
Academic hikes are 2 1/2 hours in length. Each trail is approximately 1 to 1 1/2 miles with little elevation gain. Numerous “hands-on” activities with learning stations are in place.
During each hike, we remind students of the many different careers that are available to them in their future.
But there is also time for teaching moments such as the screech of a hawk, the sight of deer, or finding scat along the trail.
The best thing about San G was hiking the trail and seeing a group of deer. I will always remember it.

Challenging Students’ Minds at San Gorgonio Outdoor Science School!
San Gorgonio Outdoor Science School’s philosophy is to teach science concepts and social skills that are suited to an outdoor setting.
The science curriculum is aligned with California State Science Standards for fifth and sixth grades, correlates with Next Generation Science Standards, and supports STEAM principles.
The program also builds 21st Century skills: (the 5 c’s) Critical thinking (problem solving), creativity (innovation), communication, collaboration, and character..
Team Building and Other Social Activities
In addition to the learning that happens during hikes and activities, we also have time for fun while developing social skills and team work. Each day there is time for organized games, learning new songs, storytelling, practicing social skills and conversation.
Students prepare each day for skit night which cumulates on the last evening with each cabin performing a skit for the enjoyment of the other students.
San G would not be complete without at least one evening spent enjoying a campfire and s’mores and of course, Line Dancing.
“Thank you for changing my life. I will never forget all the science and good times I had here. I am now ready to become a scientist.”
